Æ Jeder seriöse Züchter macht sich vorab Gedanken, was Zucht bedeutet und welches Ziel er verfolgen und erreichen möchte. Er hat Vorstellungen und überlegt wie und womit sie zu erreichen sind. Er sucht zu Beginn Tiere aus, die seinen Vorstellungen schon sehr nahe kommen und versucht mit überlegten Verpaarungen diese zu optimieren.
Züchten heisst selektieren. Ein seriöser Züchter achtet auf Gesundheit und Typ seiner Tiere, welcher durch Definition (Standart) der jeweiligen Rassen vorgegeben ist. Nur die besten Tiere werden zur weiteren Zucht eingesetzt. Aus der gleichen Verpaarung werden nur wenige diesem Anspruch genügen und "nachgezogen". Das erweitert den Bestand und hat zur Folge, dass sowohl ehemalige Zuchtkatzen als auch junge Erwachsene, welche die Erwartungen nicht erfüllen konnten, kastriert werden. Wenige können bleiben (da verträglich) andere müssen platziert werden. Sie finden sich mit ihrer neuen Rolle als Kastrat nicht mehr zurecht oder werden von den Mitkatzen tyrannisiert (regelrecht vermöbelt). Die daraus resultierende Unruhe in der Gruppe führt zu Stress der Tiere und deren Besitzer und ist der Gesundheit nicht förderlich.
Ich als Züchter möchte diesen Tieren einen optimalen Lebensplatz gönnen, an dem sie alleiniger Mittelpunkt und umschwärmter Liebling des Hauses sein dürfen. Zu Beginn meiner Züchterlaufbahn war ich auch der weit verbreiteten Meinung, dass alle "ausgemusterten" Zuchttiere unbedingt zu behalten sind. Aber das ist unfair gegenüber dem Tier. Ich liebe alle meine Tiere. Aber sind wir mal ehrlich; ich kann nicht allen Tieren die gleich volle Liebe und Zuwendung geben, wie ein Besitzer, der 1 - 2 Katzen hält. Mit Erleichterung sehe ich, wie sich diese Tiere am neuen Ort positiv entfalten können. Das ist Realität und das ist mit ein Grund, warum ich mich, jeweils mit schweren Herzen, von Kastraten trennen werde.
Katzen gehören nicht zu den Rudeltieren. Grundsätzlich sind es Einzelgänger und dulden keine Eindringlinge in ihrem Revier. (ausser zur Paarungszeit) Leider können wir Züchter diesem Umstand nicht Rechnung tragen und halten uns mehrer Tiere im Haushalt. Dass sie sich trotzdem mehrheitlich sehr sozial und verträglich verhalten ist auch ein Merkmal der Rasse Maine Coon.
Æ Every respectable breeder does think about the meaning of breeding and the goal they follow with their cattery. He has beliefs and of course thinks how they can be achieved. At the beginning he carefully selects animals that come as close as possible to his vision and tries to optimize with pairings that are well considered.
Breeding means selecting. A respectable breeder pays attention to health and type of his animals that are given through definition (standard) of the particular race. Only the best animals can be chosen for breeding. From repeat pairings only few will meet the expectations and therefore be selected for breeding purposes. Like this continuance will be expanded but it also results in castrating both former breeding cats as well as young adult cats that do not meet the expectations. Unfortunately only few can stay within the cattery as they are compatible, others have to be placed. The reason is that they cannot orient themselves within the group as castrated cat or that they are tormented by their fellow cats. Of course this quickly leads to trouble and stress within the animals and their owners and even influences their health.
For me as a breeder it is most important that my animals have ideal conditions of living so that they can take centre stage and be adored sweetheart of the house. When I first started breeding I was convinced that all former breeding animals should be kept. I soon found out that it is impossible, moreover it is unfair to the animal. I do love all my cats. But to be honest, I cannot give as much affection and love to all of them as someone with just one or two cats. However I am relieved to see that my dear cats settle down easily in their new homes and develop positively. So that is reality and for me it is the main reason, although with a heavy heart, to place my castrated cats.
Cats are not animals to live in a pride since they are more of a loner and apart from the paring season do not tolerate intruders. Unfortunately for breeders it is impossible to allow for them to live like this as we have to hold several animals within the cattery. The reason why they mostly behave very social and compatible is one of the characteristics of the race of the Maine Coons.
